Abstraction Isn't Concrete

Project type

sculpture

Date

March 2023

Abstraction Isn't Concrete is a conceptual sculpture that plays on the phrase "the road to hell is paved with good intentions." At first glance it appears to be a pallet of generically-branded bags of concrete mixture, ready to be used. But a quick reading of the text "Good Intentions Concrete Mix" printed on each bag invites curiosity, where a joke starts to unpack. The branding that includes the phrase "makes roads to hell," the gallery context, and the giant spill on the floor work together to raise questions about why it's there, what it's going to be used for, and is the whole project doomed from the start? This space of absurdity and humor is my way of poking fun at our clumsy collective attempts to do good and inviting us all to reflect on our unfinished potential.
